Frequently Asked
Questions

A psychoeducational assessment is a form of psychological testing that uses standardized tests (in-person or online), interviews, questionnaires, and a review of the client’s history and patterns (academic and medical) to explore an individual’s specific areas of strength and need. It considers multiple areas of development and functioning, including cognitive, academic, social, emotional, adaptive, and behavioural functioning. Ultimately, a psychoeducational assessment can help to outline how an individual can use their strengths to pursue their goals and advocate for themselves in their daily life.

Common signs that indicate a psychoeducational assessment might be appropriate include: Difficulty sustaining focus or attention Struggling academically despite high effort Challenges with starting, planning, or completing schoolwork/homework Excessive anxiety towards tests, presentations, or school in general Lack of confidence and self-esteem Behavioural problems at school Difficulty interacting with or relating to peers Challenges with emotional and self-regulation Frequent fidgeting or an inability to sit still Teachers or caregivers have voiced concerns

Our clinicians are licensed and trained to work with children and youth, and very specific young adults who require a higher level of support across different parts of their lives, such as learning, socializing and living independently as they transition into adulthood. We do not complete psychological assessments, or offer psychotherapy services to other adult populations.

Oui! Tous nos services sont disponibles en Français et en Anglais. Even if a child's family speaks primarily English at home, if they recieve academic programming in French (i.e. they are in French Immersion) portions of the testing will be done in French.

A complete assessment, from planning, direct testing time, scoring and report writing, through to the final feedback meeting most often takes anywhere from 15-20 hours. The testing itself can take anywhere from 3 to 8 hours. The entire process, from intake to feedback, typically occurs over 6 to 8 weeks. In some cases, we will need to book additional time with an individual to complete the assessment, while in other instances, the assessment will finish earlier than anticipated. The variability of time depends on the youth’s energy levels and needs throughout the assessment. A break for lunch is always provided; further breaks are given on an as-needed basis.

Each assessment is tailored to a youth's individual profile and specific needs. An initial consultation is required to determine what testing measures will be used as well as time requirements. As such, the cost of an assessment can vary. Our current hourly rate is $250. Families are encouraged to consult their extended health benefits (if applicable) to verify is psychologists or psychological services are covered. We do not offer direct billing, but we do provide a full receipt for reimbursement.

We do! However, we prioritize conducting assessments in-person as this format is most conducive to testing and allows for a more fulsome evaluation.

A referral is not necessary. However, if you intend to seek coverage through insurance, we recommend you review your policy to ensure a referral is not necessary in order to receive coverage.

Children can be reluctant towards an assessment for a wide range of reasons, but there are lots of things you can do to help with this. To learn more, click here!
